RSPB Sandwell Valley is an enchanting urban green space located in the middle of a vibrant and diverse community. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to engage with the young people (11 to 18 years old) who visit the reserve or live nearby.
Our youth engagement volunteers will deliver outdoor activities for the local youth club, and in summer evenings, for young people visiting the reserve. This may include bushcraft, orienteering, pond dipping, scavenger hunts, practical conservation / gardening…
We want to make young people feel welcome on the nature reserve, and encourage them to use the site responsibly, so they can enjoy the beautiful surroundings and connect with nature. This has been shown to have a positive effect on both physical and mental health, and young people’s self-confidence.
Skills:
We are looking for an enthusiastic people person, who can relate to young people. You will need to be comfortable working with 11 to 18 year-olds, and be able to motivate and inspire them. Previous experience of working with young people or children would be beneficial.
Responsible and reliable, you will be able to work in a small team and take the initiative when needed.
An enthusiasm for the natural world / the outdoors is also important. If you have some knowledge of wildlife or environmental conservation, it’s great! If you don’t though, don’t worry: we can help you pick this up after you start.
