OPP OF THE DAY: Event First Aider, St. John Ambulance

Do you love the idea of looking after the public during unexpected moments of need? Would you like to volunteer at your choice of local events from village fetes to sports games, from concerts to city-wide marathons? Would you like to be trained by, and support, the country’s leading first aid charity? Then become an Event First Aider with St John Ambulance!

As a First Aider on events both large and small, you will be there in the moments that matter, from reassuring and giving minor treatments, to being part of a life-saving team. You will be supporting the wider work of St John Ambulance, as we aim to build more health resilience into local communities including your own.

Where:
Multiple venues across Dudley Council area, including Brierley Hill, Dudley, Halesowen, Sedgley, and Stourbridge.

When:
Mostly evenings and weekends.

Commitment/Duration:
In this role, you would ideally be volunteering for two shifts per month (a total of 16 hours), plus attending ongoing training at your local unit every 1-2 weeks. Owing to the responsibility associated with this role, we look for volunteers who are able to remain involved for at least a year. There is no maximum period.

Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively verbally with a wide range of people
Strong listening, compassion and empathy skills
Enthusiasm for the work of St John Ambulance and ability to model our values
Ability to work as part of a team
Physically fit for a role which requires moving around an event, and treating people (including the ability to kneel by a collapsed patient and deliver effective chest compressions for at least four minutes without stopping)
Comfortable with Microsoft Office applications (optional)
Ability to volunteer flexibly and across geographically dispersed locations (optional).
