OPP OF THE DAY: Digi Dudley Buddy, Just Straight Talk

Just Straight Talk is looking for volunteers to join our Digi Buddy team to support elderly people of a non-working age isolated carers aged 45 and over.

As a Just Straight Talk (JST) Digital Buddy volunteer you can help unleash the power of technology to ensure that elderly people of a non-working age and isolated carers aged 45 and over are not excluded from the digital world.

Utilising the technology they may already own and prefer to use, or using the Samsung tablets JST have procured, our volunteers will:

• Work with people and partners across Dudley to enhance digital skills opportunities.
• Offer impartial advice on technology.
• Set up new tech and install hardware and software.
• Show people how to use their tech at home e.g., shop online, send and receive emails and video calls with family and friends.
• Make adaptations to support a disabled person’s specific technology needs.
• Troubleshooting

Our volunteers will:

• Contact end users to arrange a date/time to support (meeting at a sheltered housing scheme for example)
• Carry out tech support for the end users you have accepted.
• Feed back on progress to the Digital Buddy Lead
• Support the Digital Buddy Lead with promoting the volunteer service in the local area.
• Get together with other Digi Dudley Buddy volunteers at team meetings and wider company events.
• Undergo necessary training on the technology we will be providing.

As a Digi Dudley Buddy volunteer, you can:

• Change the lives of older people and carers.
• Benefit from technology training.
• Network with other Digi Dudley Buddies.
• Be flexible with your volunteering and plan it around your other work and home commitments.
• Feel a sense of happiness and wellbeing from helping others

The volunteering is flexible, and you can arrange your tasks in and around your work and home commitments In terms of how much time you can offer, this will also depend on the end-user and the demand in the Dudley Borough.

Also…

• We pay travel expenses at 45p per mile.
• As you will be help vulnerable adults you’ll need an enhanced DBS check, which will be renewed/checked every 2 years (at no cost to the volunteer).
• You will gain valuable experience, skills and references
• You’ll be able to be part of a wonderful team at JST.

Skills:

You don’t need to be a tech guru to help out. If you use a computer at home or work, and perhaps support family and friends with their tech issues, you are likely to have the skills we need.
• A passion to help others.
• Good IT and computer skills.
• The ability to communicate well with people.
• Patience and empathy.
• Your own transport or good transport links (expenses paid).
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to people
• Good knowledge of basic ICT skills, particularly with Android tablet devices
• Willing and enthusiastic to share the benefits of ICT with others
• A desire to continue to develop personal and ICT skills
