OPP OF THE DAY: Community Champion, The R.S.P.B. Sandwell Valley

RSPB Sandwell Valley is an enchanting urban green space located in the middle of a vibrant and diverse community. We have lots to offer to our local communities, from the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in green spaces, to gaining skills and confidence through volunteering.

We are looking for community champions to help us reach out to local people, so they can reap those benefits. You will inspire people to come and visit RSPB Sandwell Valley by:
– Attending local venues and events, talking to people about nature and RSPB Sandwell Valley,
– Delivering fun nature-inspired crafts sessions, games or activities at these venues,
– Giving presentations to community groups about the reserve,
and / or
– Leading fun activities or walks on site.

This is a varied role, and you will be able to mould it to suit you, for example, if you love giving presentations but not delivering activities (or the opposite!). You will meet a wide range of people, from families to history societies to community centres, and help them enjoy nature. You might be helping with a practical activity, such as bird box making or just by having an informal chat.

Skills:

We are looking for an enthusiastic people person! If you enjoy meeting new people, striking up conversations, and are able to engage with people of various ages and backgrounds, this is the role for you.

Full of initiative and reliable, you need to be comfortable working with members of the public. We need you to be able to work in small teams, care about the wellbeing of local communities and have an interest in wildlife or the outdoors.

If you have some knowledge of wildlife or the local area, it’s great! If you don’t though, don’t worry: we can help you pick this up after you start.

Some previous experience of working with the public is desirable but not necessary.
